Mildew – Sulphur in powder or liquid form, downy mildew Sulphur-copper which is particularly useful in wine-growing areas of Northern Greece where rainfall is increased during spring and summer. Copper, like heavy metal, is used with caution.
Greek wine producers and organic wine farms restrict the use of copper to the minimum possible, and there are times when they refuse to intervene and even repeatedly, losing part of their production (something not uncommon for Organic farmers).
The strong Greek winds, as well as the high summer temperatures, favor the vine and do not allow extensive growth of microorganisms. Thus, only 2 to 3 sulfur passes are usually sufficient to combat them.
Biological combat/control
The existence of a large number of beneficial species of fauna helps to maintain the balance of the immediate environment of vineyards, which is a very important factor for organic viticulture in Greece.
Insects, such as the Lobesia botrana, are treated with the Bacillus Thuringia, while many winegrowers take care of some others manually.
The various weeds are combated with mechanical means, while for the fertilization of the vineyards, only organic preparations of animal or plant origin are used (often “digested” stems and grape skins from organic vineyards).http://biziosestate.gr/en/organic-farming/
