Bioclimatic takes into account the following principles:
- Heat protection of the buildings in winter and summer using appropriate techniques such as external enveloping of the buildings, adequate insulation and air tightness of the openings and the building itself
- Use of solar energy for heating buildings in the winter season and daylight hours. This could be achieved by an adequate orientation of the building and its openings and by passive solar systems which collect solar radiation
- Protection of the buildings from heat, primarily by shading but also using the envelope of the building (i.e. use of special reflective colours and surfaces)
- Heat removal using passive calling systems such as natural ventilation
- Proper insulation combined with solar control to provide light in the interior spaces
