RULES, PRINCIPLES AND PILLARS
Wikipedia is constantly evolving.
For this reason, his rules, recommendation records and guidelines are evolving too.
The 5 principles on which Wikipedia is based, however, are special: they are fixed and unquestionable.
PILLARS 1/6
1. Being an encyclopedia
2. Adopting and supporting the NPoV
3. Being free, open and cozy
4. Fostering respect and active listening of others’ PoV
5. Updating all the rules (except the 5 pillars!)
PILLARS 2/6
1. ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA
- It combines many features of general and specialized encyclopedias, almanacs, and gazetteers
- It is not a soapbox, an advertising platform, a vanity press, an experiment in anarchy or democracy, an indiscriminate collection of information, or a web directory
- It is not a dictionary, a newspaper, or a collection of source documents, although some of its fellow Wikimedia projects are
PILLARS 3/6
2. NEUTRAL POINT OF VIEW
- Voices should not contain the opinions of only one party
- Voices should report different theories about a topic
- Theories should be presented in a clear and impartial way and with the support of the necessary sources
- Do not take a position in controversial cases, and proceed to the right discussion for the resolution of conflicts
PILLARS 4/6
3. FREE CONTENT (ANYONE CAN EDIT)
- Wikipedia is free and doesn’t contain publicity
- Items can be changed by anyone
- All contributions are published with free licenses and are reusable
- No one owns the entries he writes
- Changes are immediately visible without any prior checking
PILLARS 5/6
4. RESPECT AND CIVILITY
- Respect the opinions of all Wikipedians
- Avoiding personal attacks and easy generalizations
- Seek consensus: Wikipedia is a collaborative project
- Trying to have a calm and open attitude
- Always assume good faith and be welcoming with the new
- Do not damage Wikipedia to support your point of view
PILLARS 6/6
5. NO FIRM RULES
- Rules can be discussed (except for the 5 pillars)
- You don’t have to worry about making trouble
- Don’t be afraid to make changes
